Overview of the PRIDE PUP Program
The FHPS PRIDE Pup program began in 2023 after many months of planning, research, and community partnership. The purpose of Forest Hills PRIDE Pups is to offer our students and staff social-emotional support, companionship, and comfort during times of calm and times of distress. They get their name from the Forest Hills PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) acronym and many PRIDE Pups are a significant part of their school behavior and student celebration systems.
Research indicates that school support dog programs provide significant benefits for students and staff. They act as a tool for a school administrator, counselor, teacher, or other facility staff member to foster a safe and effective environment for students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. School support dogs are highly trained animals with a deep love for people. They do not perform specific tasks or support individuals but rather offer comfort and companionship to all who come in contact with them. Forest Hills Public Schools PRIDE Pups will provide support for mainstream and special education students as well as staff members in the following ways:
- Decrease stress, anxiety, and burnout
- Crisis support for the entire district
- Create an increased sense of belonging and encourage school culture and climate
- Support students with social skill development, emotional regulation, and sensory input
- Provide opportunities for connection, comfort, and companionship
- Develop positive human-animal interactions in a safe environment
- Encourage literacy development through dog-student reading buddy opportunities
- Provide the opportunity for student tasks and rewards within the PBIS framework
Forest Hills Public Schools partners with Kim Heys of Interquest CARES who provides all training for staff and the dogs. Each PRIDE Pup has a school handler(s) and a host family. The school handler(s) manages the dog during school hours and facilitates student support, social-emotional groups, and classroom visits. Host families care for the dogs when they are not working at school. Host families are FHPS staff members who commit to providing a loving home, transporting the dog to school, and managing all healthcare-related appointments.
